Physical Education

PE Intent Statement

At Berkswell CofE Primary school, we aim to deliver a high-quality, inclusive and progressive Physical Education curriculum using the Primary PE Planning scheme. Our intention is to inspire all pupils to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and healthy lifestyles. Through engaging and challenging learning experiences, children will develop the fundamental movement skills, physical competence, confidence and resilience needed to participate successfully in a wide range of physical activities. The Primary PE Planning curriculum is designed around the principles of being Physical, Thinking, Social and Healthy Me, ensuring that pupils develop not only their physical abilities but also teamwork, communication, leadership, decision-making and self-reflection skills.

We intend for all children to:

  • Develop competence and confidence in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Build a secure foundation of fundamental movement skills that progress throughout their primary years.
  • Experience success, challenge and enjoyment regardless of starting point or ability.
  • Learn to cooperate, communicate and compete fairly while demonstrating respect and sportsmanship.
  • Understand the importance of physical activity for their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
  • Develop resilience, determination and a positive attitude towards an active and healthy lifestyle.
  • Participate in competitive and non-competitive opportunities that foster teamwork, leadership and personal achievement.

Through carefully sequenced lessons and clear progression of knowledge and skills, we strive to ensure every child leaves primary school physically literate, confident in their abilities and motivated to continue participating in physical activity throughout their lives. The curriculum is aligned with National Curriculum requirements and promotes inclusive, adaptive and engaging learning opportunities for all pupils.

Inclusivity is at the heart of our PE curriculum. Through the Primary PE Planning scheme, all pupils are provided with opportunities to participate, achieve and experience success regardless of their ability, background, confidence levels or individual needs. The scheme promotes adaptive teaching and a holistic approach through its Physical, Thinking, Social and Healthy Me framework, ensuring that every child can access learning and make progress.

Inclusivity is ensured by:

  • Adapting activities, equipment and challenges so that all pupils can participate and experience success at an appropriate level.
  • Providing progressive learning journeys that allow children to build skills and confidence over time regardless of their starting point.
  • Using a variety of teaching approaches, including modelling, peer support, questioning and guided practice, to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Creating a positive and supportive learning environment where effort, perseverance and personal improvement are celebrated alongside performance.
  • Offering a broad and balanced range of activities that enables all pupils to discover areas in which they can succeed and enjoy being physically active.
  • Promoting teamwork, respect and cooperation, ensuring every child feels valued and included within lessons and competitive opportunities.
  • Using assessment to inform teaching, allowing staff to identify barriers to learning and provide appropriate support and challenge for individuals

As a result, all pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, competence and a positive attitude towards physical activity, enabling them to flourish both within PE lessons and beyond school life.

Extra-Curricular

We endeavour to provide as many extra-curricular sporting opportunities as possible to all of our children.  We run a comprehensive list of extra-curricular clubs throughout the year for children to explore a range of different sporting activities and we run a programme of events which introduce all children to competing against others in representation of their house.

Through our active membership in the South Solihull Partnership, we aim to ensure that as many children as possible are given the opportunity to represent the school.  From being a member of our netball, football or basketball team to representing the school in a cricket, dance, cheerleading and rugby festival, there are a great many opportunities for the children to put their skills into practise and to compete against other children in Solihull.

School Games Kit Mark

Once again, Berkswell has been awarded the School’s Games Gold Kite-mark, which the school has consistently held for the past few years.  This is in recognition of the wide variety of sporting opportunities  that we provide for children across the school.
