MFL Intent Statement
At Berkswell School, the learning of a modern foreign language is ambitious for all pupils and promotes cultural curiosity, providing a valuable educational, social and enriching experience. It fosters an appreciation of the multilingual and multicultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, enabling them to gain insight into their own culture and those of others through authentic, real-life contexts.
The MFL curriculum is carefully sequenced and cumulative, ensuring the progressive development of secure linguistic foundations. Pupils are exposed to authentic French language and culture, supporting the development of meaningful communication skills and cultural understanding.
The curriculum is designed to be inclusive, creative and engaging, ensuring all pupils can access learning and make sustained progress. It supports the development of linguistic competence and extends pupils’ understanding of how language works, equipping them with knowledge and skills that contribute to lifelong language learning.
Modern foreign language learning also provides purposeful opportunities for cross-curricular links, reinforcing and applying knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subject areas. The curriculum promotes communication, enquiry and curiosity, enabling pupils to explore language through questioning and meaningful interaction.
