Design and Technology Intent Statement

Design and Technology at Berkswell is rooted in the values of love, togetherness and aspiration. We believe that every child is entitled to a curriculum that nurtures their creativity, supports their individuality, and inspires them to aim high. Our approach ensures that all pupils feel valued and included, with the same high‑quality learning opportunities available to everyone. Where additional support is needed, thoughtful and personalised amendments are made so that every child can access and enjoy the full DT curriculum. This commitment to inclusion reflects our belief that learning is most powerful when every child feels a sense of belonging and shared purpose.

Creativity is central to our vision for Design and Technology, especially as it continues to be recognised globally as one of the top ten key skills for the future. Our curriculum is intentionally inspiring, rigorous and practical, encouraging children to be imaginative to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems. The curriculum develops the key skills to design, make, evaluate and technical knowledge. Pupils learn how to generate ideas, plan effectively and construct high‑quality products, using both traditional tools and modern computing and technology skills to improve the precision, functionality and overall quality of their designs. They are encouraged to think critically at every stage—questioning choices, solving problems and evaluating both their own work and the work of others with increasing independence and insight. Children also gain essential knowledge of cooking and nutrition, understanding how to make healthy choices and prepare food safely. Through studying past and present design and technology, pupils develop a critical awareness of its impact on daily life, industry and the wider world, recognising how innovation and technological advancement continue to shape the society they live in.

Design and Technology is linked to real life scenarios by connecting to other areas of learning. Children draw upon knowledge from history, geography and English topics and apply knowledge and skills from mathematics, science, computing and art, to develop a love for the subject and inspire their designs.  They learn to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative and enterprising individuals with increased confidence to explore new ideas. These experiences help them develop resilience, independence and the ability to collaborate effectively, preparing them to become capable citizens in an ever‑changing world.

We believe that a rich curriculum and high‑quality teaching in Design and Technology prepares children for the future. By fostering creativity, cultural awareness, practical capability and problem‑solving skills, DT supports children in becoming thoughtful, skilled and imaginative individuals. Our aim is to equip every pupil with the confidence and competence to shape their future with curiosity, creativity and ambition, ensuring that Design and Technology plays a meaningful role in their personal development and in the well‑being and prosperity of the wider community.
